WRRC Director Gives Final Spring 2025 Tumamoc Talk

Desert Laboratory on Tumamoc Hill
On Wednesday, March 19, 2025, WRRC Director Sharon B. Megdal was the featured speaker for the third and last of the Spring 2025 Tumamoc Talks lecture series, Making Agriculture More Sustainable in Arid Lands, held at the Desert Laboratory on Tumamoc Hill in Tucson, AZ. These talks, which are hosted by the U of A Arizona Institute for Resilience, focus on the science, ecology, history, and culture of the Sonoran Desert. Megdal’s presentation, “Arizona’s Framework for Water Regulation and Agricultural Sustainability,” explored water policy and management. Influencing factors of water regulation include local demands and supply, type of use, and socio-cultural factors. She discussed several of Arizona’s “wicked water problems,” which are water issues with no simple solutions, and emphasized the need for interdisciplinary collaboration.
Tumamoc Talks are open to the public, follow a thematic series format, and are typically held in the fall and spring. Other speakers in the Spring 2025 series gave presentations titled “Can We Produce Protein from Insects in Arid and Semi-Arid Environments?” and “Cultivating an Equitable and Sustainable Food System in Southern Arizona.” The next series will commence in Fall 2025.
