The Green Desert

Lakes Powell and Mead, the two largest Colorado River storage reservoirs in the US, have dwindled to historic lows and may never recover. The Green Desert, an hour-long documentary featuring Southern California’s Imperial Valley, a highly productive agricultural area that depends on the Colorado River, discusses drought and other water issues affecting Imperial Valley agriculture. Imperial Valley produces 90% of the leafy greens consumed in the US during the winter months, so water shortages there can have far-reaching effects on food security. The documentary will air on multiple PBS affiliate stations, including AZPM Channel 6, at 11:00 pm MST on April 23, 2025, and is also available for streaming on the PBS website.
