This year, International Women’s Day was officially held on March 8, and called for the effort to “Accelerate Action,” a campaign which emphasizes the importance of taking swift and decisive steps to achieve gender equality. On Wednesday, March 12, 2025, the Women in Water Diplomacy Network (WWDN) celebrated International Women’s Day by hosting a panel discussion, titled A Path Forward for Women, Water, Peace and Security – Elevating Central Asian voices from across the Women in Water Diplomacy Network. During the event, WWDN organizers introduced its newly formed Global Leadership Council, which consists of 18 women, including WRRC Director Sharon B. Megdal, who will provide strategic oversight over implementation of the Network’s global strategy, helping to drive its mission to advance gender equity in transboundary water governance.

Originating in the Nile Basin in 2017, the Women in Water Diplomacy Network is a global community of women water leaders working collectively to strengthen women’s leadership in transboundary water decision making. The Network focuses on empowerment, experience exchange, research cooperation, and elevating women's voices in transboundary dialogues at local, regional, and global levels.
